Arriving into North Devon from Somerset, the coast is backed by Exmoor and the cliffs backing the beaches are usually wooded and rise to 1000 feet. With a few exceptions, the beaches along this stretch are mostly pebbles and rocks. The town of Ilfracombe has a few beaches, but the cliffs are of Ilfracombe slate and the sand is greyish and not very attractive. Past Morte Point are the long, sandy, west-facing surf beaches of Woolacombe, Croyde, Saunton and Westward Ho!

If you're planning a day out, it's well worth either taking your own food and drink, or buying these from a shop along the way. Food and drink can be very expensive if bought from beach shops and cafes.
