South-east Devon Beaches

Arriving into North Devon from Somerset, the coast is backed by Exmoor and the cliffs backing the beaches are usually wooded and rise to 1000 feet. With a few exceptions, the beaches along this stretch are mostly pebbles and rocks. The town of Ilfracombe has a few beaches, but the cliffs are of Ilfracombe slate and the sand is greyish and not very attractive. Past Morte Point are the long, sandy, west-facing surf beaches of Woolacombe, Croyde ands Saunton.
On the southern coast, the beaches are mostly small flint shingle west of Lyme Regis until Exmouth which has a long sandy beach bordering the Exe estuary.
Many of the car parks for the smaller beaches are run by the National Trust, and are free to members, but can be expensive to non-members. If you're planning a day out, it's well worth either taking your own food and drink, or buying these from a supermarket along the way. Food and drink can be very expensive if bought from beach shops and cafes.
