Sandbanks is a very popular sandy beach, ideal for families and lies just east of Poole harbour. It usually attains the Blue Flag award and consists of fine sand interspersed with groynes. The shore is backed partly by low dunes and partly by a promenade. Lifeguards patrol in summer, and dog restrictions apply on the main section of the beach from 1st May until 30th September. Parking is at a P&D car park just a few yards from the beach. Facilities include deckchair hire, cold water showers, toilets, cycle parking and a beach cafe. Being close to the large expanse of Poole Harbour, there are strong currents around mid-tide as the water flows to fill (or empty) the harbour. This can induce rip currents between the groynes.
