Lying at a height of just over 1000 feet, Llyn Hirathlyn is a pleasant if unspectacular moorland lake just north of the A4212 near Blaenau Ffestiniog. Parking is at a convenient layby on the north side of the road (Grid ref : SH756365), from where a public bridleway leads to the lake. On approaching the farm, bear left at the gateway to reach a small track west of the farm which can then be followed under the former Bala - Ffestiniog railway to the lake. The water is fairly shallow and on my visit there were plenty of dragonflies and fritillary butterflies.
